As dawn breaks on a crisp, icy morning, de Havilland Mosquitos of 139 Sqn return to base at RAF Upwood after a long overnight trip to Germany in early 1944. There had never been an aircraft like the de Havilland Mosquito; constructed almost entirely of wood with two Merlin engines bolted under the wings, it could outrun any other piston-engine fighter in the world.
Nicknamed the ‘Wooden Wonder’ it was also perhaps the most versatile aircraft of WWII and operated in a huge number of roles including low-level precision strikes or as part of the RAF’s elite Pathfinder force used to locate and identify targets ahead of the main bomber force.
